Henry John Waylen was a member of the Territorial Force who fought with 1st/5th Glosters in France and subsequently joined one of the two Glosters battalions that went to Macedonia. There he contracted tuberculosis. He returned home, was discharged from the Army and died in 1917. His grave was never given a proper headstone.
Tewkesbury Historical Society alerted the CWGC who subsequently made a headstone which was installed by Pte Waylen’s grave in May of this year.
On 10 October the local Community officially welcomed Pte Waylen home and a service was conducted at the graveside by the Reverend Charles Whitney.  John Sidebottom, Pte Waylen’s only surviving relative, had travelled over from Australia and laid a floral wreath at the grave.  He gave a short talk during which he informed everyone that after shortly after their son Henry’s death Mr and Mrs Waylen also passed away.  This was in all probability from the flu epidemic which swept the UK at the time.
Royal British Legion and Association Standards were paraded at the Service.  Wreaths were laid by the RBL, The Rifles (on behalf of the Association) and the local community.  Mr Sidebottom also laid a wooden cross with the Glosters Back Badge at the grave.
